Special to GUIDON
During the school year, 45 percent of all students in the Waynesville R-VI district qualify for free or reduced lunches. Many also receive a weekly Snack in a Pak to get through the weekend. When school closes for the summer, who helps to ensure there is enough food for these children? A couple of local area organizations believe no one is addressing the issue.
The Armed Services YMCA of Missouri and S.A.L.T. — Supporting All Lives Together, — are developing the Summer Lunch Buddies Program for eight weeks during July and August. “We plan to feed lunch to 100 children each day, Monday through Friday, for eight weeks,” said Jackie Flynt, co-founder of the S.A.L.T organization. “We will begin the week of July 9 and end Aug. 31.”

By Chap. (Capt.) Pat Opp Special to GUIDON
It sounds like a cliché during difficult times, doesn’t it? Yet, this is what we are told to do when we go through the fiery furnace and face difficult losses.
Losses like the death of a loved-one; a child stricken with a debilitating disease, a spouse seeking a divorce, or finances taking a hit with the loss of a job. In moments like that, it seems like prayer is the last thing we want to do. Actually, it’s the best thing we can do.
Listen to the comforting advice the Apostle Paul shares with the believers at Philippi. He writes, “Don’t worry about anything; instead pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for what he has done. Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus” (Philippians 4:6-7).
