The Waynesville High School boys’ golf team played host to 12 area teams and finished third in the Tiger Invitational on Monday.

ImageEach team had two individual golfers and two teams of two. Waynesville took third with a total team sore of 347, lead by the duo of John Lim and Kyle Creach, who combined for a 78. Waynesville’s Marcus Hibbert and Shane Jewett followed with an 81. Wade Howser shot a 92 and Cody Vaughn shot a 96 for Waynesville.

Lebanon won the tourney with a 304; Cuba placed second with a 319, and Osage followed WHS to round out the top four with a 361.

Monday’s third-place appearance was a turnaround from the 21st-place finish for Waynesville in the 25-team Laker Invitational Tournament, held April 18 in Camdenton. WHS finished that tourney with a team score of 393 led by All-Ozark Conference player Jacob Malley, who shot an 82. Malley was the only Tiger to leave the course under triple digits.

Kansas City’s Rockhurst High School won the Laker Invitational with a 306.

Up next: Waynesville begins district play on Wednesday.


Tennis team gives West Plains a run for its money

The Waynesville varsity boy’s tennis team lost a close contest, 5-4, with visiting West Plains on Monday.

Among the winners for Waynesville: Lucas Cressler, Tyler Warren and Hunter Sadler won in singles matches, while Sadler and Carl Herrmann won their doubles match with West Plains.

Monday’s action followed the team’s sixth-place finish in the Tigers’ home varsity tournament on Saturday, highlighted by a second-place doubles finish by Bryce Sadler and Cressler, and Waynesville’s 7-2 win over Salem on April 19.

Against Salem, Cressler, Tyler Warren, Hunter Sadler and Garette Herrmann led the Tigers to victory in singles matches, while the teams of Bryce Sadler and Cressler, Warren and Devonte Baity and Hunter Sadler and Garette Herrmann swept the doubles matches.

Up next: The WHS squad was scheduled to travel to Rolla on Tuesday and Osage today before heading to Joplin on Friday. The team’s next home tournament is scheduled Monday against Willow Springs.
