John Maxwell, a prolific author, provides us with a dynamic concept of leadership.

He says, “All leadership is influence.” From the Christian perspective, Jesus gives us an excellent example of leadership. Jesus said, “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives His life for the sheep. But a hireling … sees the wolf …, flees…, and does not care about the sheep. I know My sheep and am known by My own.”

Jesus’ words provide a few golden nuggets on leadership and they even explain the difference between a shepherd and a cowboy.

Shepherds lead (by example) from the front, while cowboys drive from the rear. A good leader cares for the wellbeing of others. This concern extends beyond the leadership lanes. Good leaders learn how to frame their words for the best possible outcome. Think about this: We are responsible for what others hear us say. So choose the right words.
Leaders know the look of “right.” A good leader stands up for right and against wrong, even though it may cost dearly.

Leaders willingly choose the hard right over the easy wrong. A good shepherd or cowboy will defend and place himself between the herd and the threat.

A good leader is trusted and trusts others who are trustworthy. Trust is earned from a proven track record.  We all know good and bad examples of leadership trust. Once the trust is established, it can easily be broken. Trust is sacred and cherished. Good leaders learn who to trust and whom to not trust.

A good leader knows those he or she leads, and is known by them. Jesus’ words remind us that shepherds know the sheep and the sheep know the shepherd. Sheep will not follow a stranger.

As a leader, we can choose to lead from the front or drive from the rear. I choose to lead from the front. If leadership is influence and I believe that it is, I wonder whom or what is your influence? In addition and, even more important, whom or what do you influence.
