Members of the board met July 26 to plan for the new year. A Membership Drive is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sept. 6 at 1 Essayons Drive. “It’s about fun, fellowship, friendship and fundraising,” said Nicole Farmer, 1st vice president in charge of membership for the year. “We encourage people to join because of the commonality of the military lifestyle. We encourage people to join because this is a great way to help give back to those in need. “We encourage people to join because everyone has something valuable to offer,” she said. The FWCSC is an all-ranks organization open to all Armed Forces personnel and spouses: Active-duty, Reserve, National Guard, retired military, surviving spouses and active or retired Department of Defense civilian employees and/or spouses, Farmer said. “We also have an associate membership. These are persons not eligible for regular membership, but they may apply to the board for approval based on percentage of membership numbers,” she said. The organization hosts monthly luncheons to encourage fellowship and to help members cultivate friendships among the community. “These luncheons are not only meant to be fun and entertaining for those attending, but also educational with guest speakers and informational flyers that are provided by various organizations,” Farmer said. “’Caring is Sharing’ is the spouse club’s motto and we host two big fundraisers during the year. Our craft fair is in November and our basket auction is in March,” she said. All money raised from the fundraisers is distributed to local community agencies in need of help through the organization’s community outreach program. “Through our merit based scholarship program, high school seniors and military spouses are awarded money in support of their college education,” The new President, Lisa Vereen, said would like for the club to remain an active forum for all military spouses, retirees, civilians and community members. She also hopes to exceed last year’s fundraising efforts. “The Fort Wood Spouses Community Club is about honoring military tradition and celebrating the modern military spouse,” Farmer said.
