MEDDAC had been the undefeated tennis champs since 2006. In the singles tournament, each team included three players, who had to be the first to win eight games, which is referred to as a Super Set, according to Rob Steinmacher, recreation aid for Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation. The team with the best two-out-of-three singles matches claimed the post championship trophy. During the match, the number one player for DENTAC, Soomo Lee, and MEDDAC tennis player Brant Fechter ended 8-0, with Lee taking the lead for DENTAC. ![]() Doug Spitalny, Medical Department Activity, returns the ball to Kristy Rodriguez, Dental Activity, during the post championship tennis match July 25. DENTAC won the final, 3-0, unseating MEDDAC, which had won the past six years. The third match between Dan Carnecer, DENTAC, and Michael Nguien, MEDDAC, ended early due to Rodriguez’s win. Carnecer led Nguien, 7-5. Lee said he was very happy with the way the championship turned out because he felt during previous years that DENTAC had come up short and the championship had slipped out of their grasp. “Today it seemed like it flowed,” Lee said. “This year, since (Rodriguez) came on board to DENTAC … I felt like it was our destiny — she is a great player.” Carnecer said he felt good about how he played and thought it was phenomenal that DENTAC won the championship trophy. “We have been looking for this since last year, but we just came up short. Hopefully we can keep this trend going,” he said. Steinmacher said FMWR had eight teams sign up for the tennis championship tournament this year. “Since last year’s championship, the quality of the teams have improved overall,” Steinmacher said. |
