Special to GUIDON
“Fun and fulfilling” was how 1st Sgt. Jesus Hernandez described his experience spending time with students at Dixon Elementary School on their first day back from summer break. Company B, 1st Battalion, 48th Infantry Regiment visited Dixon Elementary School on Sept. 4 as part of the Dragoon Battalion’s continued effort to support the city of Dixon. ![]() Staff Sgt. Michael Sullivan spends time talking to students as they eat. At the request of the school’s principal, Joyce Shepherd, the Bravo team spent time with students in the lunch room and on the playground during their lunch break period. “I felt that our presence was very much appreciated by the staff,” Hernandez said. “I think this was a great chance for us to break from our normal routine of engaging in constant training cycles and to get back in touch with our childhoods.” As the teachers and staff were preparing for the first day, Shepherd escorted the company around the school. The hallways were decorated with several American flags and pictures of the students’ military Family members. Shepherd explained that the overall theme of the school year would be patriotism. “As we were escorted around the school by Ms. Shepherd, I could tell that the community really appreciated the military,” said Staff Sgt. Paul Edens, Co. B, 1-48th Inf. Bn. drill sergeant. “The teachers and staff were really excited for us to be there because we helped to enhance the patriotic theme of the school.” The unit assisted the kindergartners during lunch opening their milk cartons, putting away trays and showing them their assigned seating. “The first day for a kindergartener in the lunch line can be a difficult event,” explained Capt.Neal Nichols, company commander. “I believe the aid provided by our drill sergeants definitely made the experience more comfortable for the kids.” After lunch, the drill sergeants had the chance to play basketball with the kids and entertain their questions. “Playing basketball was pretty cool and fun,” said Staff Sgt. Raymond Cottrell “It was a great opportunity to be able to interact with the children on their first day.” As the time with the students ended, the staff, teachers, and students expressed their appreciation for the company’s help. As Dixon’s sponsor, the unit plans to continue their volunteering throughout the school year. “I think we have a very important role to give back to the community as sponsors,” said Staff Sgt. Michael Sullivan. “Every little bit of help we contribute counts in the long term relationship with the local community.” |
