The annual Maneuver Support Center of Excellence and Fort Leonard Wood retention awards ceremony was held Feb. 5 at the Pershing Community Center.

“Major Gen. Yenter and I want to personally thank you for all the hard work you’ve done over the past few months. You are helping Soldiers not only make the Army their profession, but their calling,” said Command Sgt. Major Robert Wells, Fort Leonard Wood and Maneuver Support Center of Excellence command sergeant major. “Congratulations to the award winners and to the units. I know that we couldn’t do this without the hard work of our retention noncommissioned officers.”

Maj. Gen. Mark Yenter, Maneuver Support Center of Excellence and Fort Leonard Wood commanding general, pins an Army Commendation Medal onto Staff Sgt. John Spruell, 3rd Chemical Brigade, as Sgt. 1st Class Scott Johnson awaits his medal. Spruell was named Career Counselor of the year and Johnson was named Retention NCO of the Year.

This event was held in order to recognize units and individuals for their efforts and impact on their retention programs.

Staff Sgt. John Spruell, 3rd Chemical Brigade career counselor, was honored as the Career Counselor of the year.

“It’s nice to be recognized, but most of the credit I have to give to my battalion guys because they are the ones in the units doing the hard work,” Spruell said.

Spruell said the most important thing about his job as a career counselor is to take care of Soldiers and meet the Army’s needs.

“Play it straight with the Soldiers, tell them the truth and never hide anything. We have to balance what the Army needs with what the Soldier needs,” Spruell said.
