The Fort Leonard Wood GUIDON was named the top newspaper at the Installation Management Command level of the Army’s Maj. Gen. Keith L. Ware Public Affairs Competition.

The GUIDON won first place in the metro-format newspaper category with the Fort Benning, Ga., “Bayonet” taking second and the “1st Infantry Division Post,” Fort Riley, Kan., taking third, IMCOM officials at Joint Base San Antonio, Texas, announced Friday.

Significant contributors to the GUIDON listed for the award includeDawn Arden, Melissa Buckley, Matt Decker, Derek Gean and Robert Johnson.

In the individual categories, Buckley received three first-place awards, one second-place award and an honorable mention.

Buckley was top category honors in Story Series with “Basic Combat Training Dairies;” in News Feature for “Females Proud to Wear Sapper Tab;” and in Personality Feature for her story, “Weigh Loss Unlocks Door to Army for Future Soldier.”

In addition, Buckley took second-place honors in the Photojournalism category for her coverage of “Best Sapper.” She also received an honorable mention in the Human Interest Feature Article category with her entry “51 and Counting.”

“We all worked very hard last year. It’s nice to be recognized, but the real credit goes to all the Soldiers that welcome me into their lives on a daily basis,” Buckley said.

“The best part about this job is getting to spend one-on-one time with the troops and being able to tell the world how awesome they really are,” she added.

In other categories, Robert Johnson took third place in the Commentary category with “Asking Myself Why.”

In the Community Relations portion of the Maj. Gen. Keith L. Ware Public Affairs Competition, Tiffany Wood took third-place honors in the Individual category and the Public Affair’s office’s Program entry, 2012 Springfield Cardinals Fort Leonard Wood Military Appreciation Day Pre-game Program, won third place. Significant contributors to the Program entry included, Wood, Jeff Maddy, Shatara Seymour and Ryan Thompson.

More than 500 entries from installations around the world were judged by IMCOM. Top three entries in each category will go forward to compete at the Department of Army level in March, IMCOM officials said.
