If you have been around the military any length of time, you’re sure to have come across the expression that the best two places to be assigned are the place you just left, and the place where you are moving to next.

Sadly, too many people make this expression a reality.

And, you probably know one or two of these folks. They are the ones who never leave the barracks on the weekend, but complain there is nothing to do. They’re the ones who lament about how great their last unit was and how “messed up” their current organization is.

These are the same folks who have never been to a Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation facility or tour, unless it was on the training schedule and required. They just keep waiting for that next bigger, better assignment.

There has been plenty of good news for Fort Leonard Wood in the past year. New dining choices on post, barracks being renovated, Single Soldier Housing improvements, quality FMWR entertainment and new schools for dependents were identified as part of quality-of-life improvements on Fort Leonard Wood.

In my years of assignments and duty stations, I have called more than a dozen military bases and installations home. Some were good; some were not, but if you are looking for a quality of life, few can touch Fort Leonard Wood for the service and facilities.

We really have it pretty good here, and it looks like it is just going to keep getting better.

Sure, there is always room for improvement, but are you doing anything about it?

If you want a better quality of life on Fort Leonard Wood, get involved. You can voice your opinion through the Interactive Customer Evaluation system online at www.wood.army.mil/newweb and click on the ICE link. There, you can anonymously comment on various services and quality-of-life issues on Fort Leonard Wood.

As for that expression about the best place to be assigned, I think it’s what you make of your duty home, and Fort Leonard Wood has plenty to offer. And you don’t have to get to your next duty station to find out the best place is the place you just left.

You’re already here.
