Special to GUIDON

Each year on the third Saturday in May, our nation observes Armed Forces Day and recognizes members from all services — Army, Marines, Navy, Air Force and Coast Guard — for their tireless efforts in defending our freedom.

Celebrated on May 20 this year, Armed Forces Day was first championed in 1949 by President Harry Truman as a time for Americans to come together and show appreciation for all military members.

This year’s theme is “Courageous Steadfast Protectors.” Service members across our military exemplify the strength of our nation. They wear the uniform and willingly raise their right hands to protect America.

On Armed Forces Day, others honor our service members for their courage and steadfast commitment, and our military members should stand proudly for their service.

Organizations on Fort Leonard Wood, such as the USO, FMWR and ACS, fuel the support to our service members and their Families by improving quality of life. We encourage your involvement in these programs and call your attention to the on-post historical memorials, museums, and parks that allow us to reflect upon the spirit of patriotism.

Thank you to each member of our team of teams — military, civilian, Family, and community — for all you do each day to contribute to or support our mission.

We are proud to serve with you.

Victory starts here — victory through skill.

(Editor’s note: Savre is the Maneuver Support Center of Excellence and Fort Leonard Wood commanding general. Stanley is the MSCoE and Fort Leonard Wood command sergeant major.)
