The annual Missouri Sales Tax Holiday for school supplies runs from Friday through Sunday.

The sales tax holiday applies to state and local sales taxes when a local jurisdiction chooses to participate in the holiday. However, local jurisdictions can choose to not participate in the holiday if they enact an ordinance to not participate.

Eligible items include school supplies up to $50 per purchase, clothing up to $100, select computers up to $1,500, graphing calculators not to exceed $150, computer software with a taxable value of $350 or less and computer peripheral devices not to exceed $1,500.

The Waynesville R-VI School District will limit parents to two bus pick-up locations in the morning and two drop-off locations in the afternoon, starting with the 2017-18 school year.

“This is a safety issue for us, especially at the elementary level,” said Dr. Chris Berger, assistant superintendent of operational services.

When a parent calls a school to switch a child from his typical afternoon drop-off location, a series of calls is initiated — from the secretary to the teacher to the transportation office to the bus driver.

“If there is a communication breakdown anywhere, this becomes a serious student safety issue,” Berger said. “We know this will be a change for our parents, but we hope they understand that our priority is child safety. Limiting the number of bus drop-off options to  just two locations simplifies the process and narrows the possibility of confusion.”

Most accessories such as watches, jewelry, and scarves do not qualify for the tax savings. School supplies are limited to items normally used in a classroom.

Waynesville will not participate in the holiday and city taxes will be collected. Participating cities include St. Robert, Rolla and Lebanon. County taxes will be collected in Pulaski and Phelps counties, however, Laclede County will participate in the holiday.

For military Families, the Exchange is tax-free every day.
