The 58th Transportation Battalion is scheduled to host an inaugural Fort Leonard Wood Joint Services Truck Rodeo, here, from noon to 4 p.m. Oct. 13, giving service members the opportunity to showcase their technical expertise. The event will be held at Training Area 228.

Events were designed to give the different branches a chance to experience the others’ vehicles while building branch cohesion and esprit d’ corps. The Air Force, Navy and Marine Corps detachments all accepted the challenge.

“We (all branches) have shown in 16 or 17 years of constant conflict that we rely on each other and we need to build that cohesion any time that we can,” said Command Sgt. Maj. Arthur Johnson, 58th Transportation Bn. command sergeant major.

Included in the competition are events such as straight line backing with a Marine Corps Logistics Vehicle System, parallel parking an Air Force commercial use tractor trailer, ally backing a Navy 7 ton/M1095 vehicle and tying down an Army High Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle.

According to Lt Col. Matt Western, 58th Transportation Bn. commander, the vehicles should be similar and easy for all competitors to adapt to.

“I think there are some similarities between the Marine Corps equipment and the Army equipment,” Western said. “Where we’re going to see differences is with the Air Force equipment, they use a commercial tractor trailer where the other services don’t. But, all of our noncommissioned officers and instructors out here already have a decade of driving heavy trucks so I think they’ll get it pretty quick.”

Along with bragging rights, the winning branch will receive a trophy and medals will be awarded to the top three individuals.

“It’s always a competition, we picked our best and I’m sure they didn’t just pick anybody off the shelf to be there,” Johnson said. “We are brothers together, but brothers give each other a hard time at the end of the day.”

The USO will be providing lunch, and the event is open to the public; however, regular gate access rules apply.
