In November, the Bruce C. Clarke Library will be celebrating Veteran’s Day, Military Family Month and American Indian Heritage Month, with children’s programs, displays of print and media library materials, information about access to digital materials, and information on accessing numerous reference databases.

The Bruce C. Clarke Library staff is proud to honor veterans, as well as our serving military and their family members by providing free library resources and services.

Nov. 11, is the anniversary of the signing of the Armistice that ended World War I.   An Act of Congress approved on May 13, 1938, made the 11th of November in each year a legal holiday known as ‘Armistice Day’.  Congress amended the act on June 1, 1954, replacing “Armistice” with Veterans, and it has been known as Veterans Day since.

The library is participating in the Remember WWI program which started in April 2017 and will continue through December 2018 marking the 100th anniversary of the United States military participation in the war. For more information, visit www.rememberww1.com

For Military Family Month the library has resources to support family members.  Behind our brave service men and women, there are family members and loved ones who share in their sacrifice and provide unending support.

November is also American Indian Heritage Month. In 1990, the month of November was chosen because it is traditionally a time when many American Indians gather for fall harvest festivals, world-renewal ceremonies, and powwows. The library will have displays available and themed story times

The Bruce C. Clarke Library continues to add to our collection of books, DVDs, and research databases to support American Indian Heritage. The library has a number of contemporary, historical and multicultural databases and digital materials available for our patrons such as the Biography Reference Center and Gale Virtual Reference Library.

Both floors of the library will be closed for Veterans Day, Nov. 10 and for Thanksgiving, Nov. 23 and 24. Training holiday special hours are 8 to 4 p.m. Nov. 13 and 22 on both floors.

For more information, call the First Floor Community Library at 573.563.4113  and the Second Floor Academic Library at 573.563.4109.

(Editor’s note: Waybright is the Bruce C. Clarke Library chief of community services.)
