The Directorate of Emergency Services now has a plan in place to help lessen traffic congestion in instances when Fort Leonard Wood’s main gate closes unexpectedly.

Lt. Col. Graham Swenson, DES director, said the decision was made to start opening the East Gate during situations that arise causing the main gate to close.

“The decision was made to ease the flow of traffic for personnel departing the installation,” Swenson said. “It allows personnel a quicker manner to depart the installation. In addition, use of the East Gate will lessen congestion out the West Gate.”

Swenson said in the event of the East Gate opening outside of normal operating hours, DES will use the Public Affairs Office and the Installation Operations Center to alert Fort Leonard Wood personnel.

“I understand people are comfortable with both the North and West gates and are probably a little unfamiliar with the East Gate,” Swenson said. “But, the East Gate would only add approximately seven miles to the commute home.”

Swenson said with as little traffic as the East Gate sees, the detour will actually make many people’s commute time much shorter when the Main Gate closes.

Regular operating hours for East Gate will remain from 5 to 9 a.m. and 2 to 6 p.m. Mondays through Fridays.
