Special to GUIDON

The holiday season is upon us, a time when we enjoy a well-deserved opportunity to relax with family and friends and to celebrate accomplishments of the past year. As we execute Holiday Block Leave operations, we ask that you practice risk mitigation in everything that you do.

Many of us travel great distances to be with our loved ones during the winter holidays. We want you to enjoy your time while remaining vigilant and focused on preventing accidents and injuries. Following responsible driving habits like planning ahead, obeying speed limits and driving defensively can ensure that you arrive safely at your destination. Never rush, delay your departure in the event weather conditions become hazardous. Always use your safety belt and ensure those in your care do the same. If you plan on drinking alcohol, always designate a driver. Impaired judgement can lead to tragic consequences.

Leaders, we want you to be engaged with your teams before, during and after HBL. Watch out for one another, identify at-risk behavior including behavior leading to misconduct or self-harm, and intervene. The holiday season can be an extremely tough time for some, especially those unable to travel home. Battle-buddies are an effective counter-measure to misconduct and can make all the difference.

For those staying local, we encourage you to experience the winter beauty unique to the heart of America. Consider making plans to sightsee different locations in Missouri, and participate in scheduled events at the USO and Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation on post. Keep in mind that safe driving and remaining alert are necessary even for short distances.

Every Soldier, Sailor, Airman, Marine and Department of Defense civilian is an important and valued member of our team of teams. We need everyone to return here for the new year safely.

We wish you a happy holiday season, and we are very proud to serve with you.

Victory starts here, victory through skill.

(Editor’s note: Savre is the Maneuver Support Center of Excellence and Fort Leonard Wood commanding general. Stanley is the MSCoE and Fort Leonard Wood command sergeant major.)
