Got a winning chili recipe? There’s still time to form a team and register for the 11th annual Polar Meltdown Chili Cook-Off.

Friday is the deadline to sign up for the event, which is being held by the Waynesville-St. Robert Chamber of Commerce and scheduled from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Jan. 20 at the St. Robert Community Center.

“During the Polar Meltdown Chili Cook-Off, we have teams that come together early in the morning to start cooking their chili, decorate their booths and put on little skits with the hope of winning an award,” explained Leanna Weathers, chamber office manager. “The community is also invited to come out and enjoy the chili.”

Entry fees are $25 for individual entries, which can include up to three participants. Teams can include up to six people — entry fees are $50 for not-profit teams — which includes military teams — or $75 for business teams. Teams can still register after Friday for an additional $25 — if there’s room. The contest is limited to a maximum of 13 teams.

In addition to cooking their best pot of chili, teams will also compete to see who can come up with the best theme, decorated booth and skit.

“We have judges who will go around and taste the chili, and then judge the teams for showmanship,” Weathers said. “The judges are responsible for choosing the team that will take home the Judges’ Choice Grand Champion Chili Award, as well as the Showmanship Award. Teams will get points toward both awards, and the team with the most total points will receive the coveted Best of Show Award.”

Got a lot of friends, family members or coworkers? They can help your teams win the annual People’s Choice Award.

“The members of the community who come out and attend the cook-off can choose their favorite chili, too, with votes determined by cash donations,” Weathers said. “The team with the most money at the end of the event wins the People’s Choice Award.”

Booths are 8-by-10 feet and include two 110 electric power receptacles (average 10 amps per outlet).

All competitors will be expected to follow the rules and regulations set forth by the chamber and the Pulaski County Health Department.

Admission to the Polar Meltdown Chili Cook-Off is $5 per person. Admission is free for children ages 4 and younger.
