Team Valima finished its 2017 volleyball season at the top of the Recreation League standings. That’s nothing new — it was the third consecutive year the team took first place.

However, this year they did it with a perfect season, finishing with an 8-0 record.

Those who have played Team Valima know they have a distinct way of motivating each other, with claps and chants as well as shouts of encouragement in a language that isn’t likely to be familiar to anyone from outside of American Samoa, where all the players are from.

“We have our own, unique way of communicating,” said player/coach Jayleen Faoa. “We’re all from the same island, although we’re all from different sides. We’re family.”

Faoa explained that in American Samoa, volleyball is one of the most popular sports, second only to football.

Team Valima members also play together throughout the year. A lot.

“We play all the time,” Faoa said. “We play here every Tuesday and Thursday, and when there’s tournaments in Rolla, we go out to Rolla.”

Their final match of the season was a forfeit win on Dec. 11, the same night Team Ace, the 554th Engineer Battalion, Team Dig It and the Hit Squad also picked up victories.

The last contested match played by Team Valima this season was on Dec. 4, when they beat Team Dig It, 25-20, 25-16. In that match, Visesio Ulberg led with six kills, while Magalo Kaisa had two kills, a hit and three aces. Faoa, Alesana Kaisa and Richard Wulf also scored points toward the win.

In other games Dec. 4:

— The Medical Department Activity defeated the Navy Detachment, 25-12, 25-22;

— Team Ace beat MEDDAC, 25-17, 25-24;

— The FLW Hit Squad beat the 14th Military Police Brigade, 25-10, 25-7, and later picked up a forfeit win.

Following Team Valima in the standings were Team Ace and the FLW Hit Squad, both at 6-2; Team Dig It and the 554th Engineer Battalion, both at 5-3; MEDDAC, at 3-5; the Navy Det. and the 1st Battalion, 48th Infantry Regiment, both at 1-7, and the 14th MP Bde., at 0-8.

Rob Steinmacher, representing the Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation Sports Department, presented the league trophy to Team Valima Dec. 11.
