Guilty of attempted bigamy

Sgt. Neil Bunting, Company F, 169th Engineer Battalion, was convicted during a general court-martial, Sept. 7, following a plea of guilty. A military judge convicted Bunting of disobeying a superior NCO's lawful order, a commissioned officer's lawful order, forgery, obtaining services under false pretenses valued at over $500, adultery on multiple occasions and attempted bigamy.

The military judge sentenced Bunting to be reduced to the grade of E-1, confinement for 15 months and to be discharged from the service with a Bad Conduct Discharge.

Bunting had forged a divorce decree so that he could get married to another woman. However, state law automatically invalidated this second attempted marriage since there was not a genuine divorce for the first marriage. Bunting also used an identification card falsely showing this second woman as his real wife in order to obtain medical services from the General Leonard Wood Army Community Hospital. The medical services amounted to a value of over $500. Bunting also violated an order from one of his noncommissioned officers and his company commander to not have contact with this second woman.
