The Missouri Department of Conservation will offer a free workshop on the basics of fly tying from 6 to 8:30 p.m. Feb. 27 at Marguerite Bray Conservation Area, located at 14220 Bridge School Road near Rolla.

Designed for participants ages 12 and older, the workshop is free and open to the public. Participants younger than 16 years old must be accompanied by an adult for the duration of the class. Participants are encouraged to pre-register.

The workshop will focus on teaching participants terminology, equipment, materials and types of flies. The workshop is hands-on, and participants will tie their own flies as part of the class.

“Come participate in this free basic fly tying class to enhance your fishing skill set,” said Travis Mills, MDC outdoor educator. “It’s a great feeling to catch a fish with a fly that you have tied on your own.”

Discover Nature Fishing programs are designed to help Missourians gain the skills and confidence to enjoy fishing opportunities on their own. Officials note that learning to tie flies offers Missourians a way to enjoy the art of fishing by preparing gear for spring fishing trips. Fishing is a great way for everyone to have fun outdoors, learn about conservation and make lasting memories together.

MDC educators will provide all necessary equipment, but participants should bring reading glasses if they use them and a pen or pencil to take notes, if desired.

Pre-registration encouraged

Participants can pre-register for the workshop online at the following link: mdc-event-web.s3licensing.com/Event/EventDetails/154215.
