The 554th Engineer Battalion flag-football team became the only team without a loss so far this season, as they defeated the 515th Engineer Company, 28-6, Sept. 26 — the same night the Office of the Staff Judge Advocate beat the previously undefeated 14th Military Police Brigade, 16-6.
The 554th Engineers — who are the two-time defending Commander’s Cup champions in flag football — improved their season record to 5-0 with the win but had to come from behind to earn it.
The 515th Engr. Co. jumped out to an early lead on a diving end-zone catch that put them ahead, 6-0. But 554th Engr. Bn. quarterback Justin Cramer and running back/wide receiver Hakeem Keith came back to score the equivalent of four touchdowns between them.
“What helped us overcome the deficit was us settling down and playing our game,” Cramer said. “We had to adjust a little on offense because of the speed they had.”
That win followed OSJA’s victory, led by quarterback Kadaven Bell, who rushed for two touchdowns and added four points through the air with 2-point-conversion passes to Wayne Chambers and Shelton Williams.
“We did pretty well,” Bell said after the game. “Playing with only seven players, we felt pretty tired, but we never gave up. This was a big win for us, and we’re just going to try to keep it going.”
OSJA took advantage of several turnovers, including key interceptions by Chambers in the first half and Bell in the second half.
“Our strength is our defense,” Bell said. “We’ve got a lot of ballhawks.”
Also Sept. 26, the U.S. Marine Corps Detachment defeated the 252nd/180th Military Police Detachment, 30-6.
Those games followed a make-up game on Sept. 24, in which the 50th Engineer Co. beat the 252nd/180th MP Det, 29-7, and games on Sept. 25, in which OSJA beat the 58th Transportation Battalion, 20-14, the 14th MP Bde. defeated the Marine Det., 21-7, and the Maneuver Support Center of Excellence beat the 2nd Battalion, 10th Infantry Regiment, 16-0.
In games played Sept. 27, the Marine Det. picked up a forfeit win, MSCoE beat the 252nd/180th MP Det., 36-8, and the 14th MP Bde. beat the 50th Engr. Co., 7-6.
The season now only has two weeks remaining.
The 554th Engr. Bn. sits at the top of the standings with a record of 5-0. They are followed by the 14th MP Bde. in second place with a record of 6-1, OSJA in third with a record of 5-1, the 58th Trans. Bn. And MSCoE, both with records of 3-2, the 50th Engr. Co. at 2-4, the Marine Det. at 1-3, the 2-10th Inf. Bn. at 1-5 and the 252nd/180th MP Det., at 0-6.
