Teams gathered at the lake at Training Area 250 Saturday for Fort Leonard Wood’s annual Cardboard Boat Race.
Racing in watercraft they constructed themselves, teams competed in an Adult Division and a Family Division for adults and children. Each team included a two-person crew, which launched from the shore and attempted to navigate around a buoy and back again.
The fastest team on the water Saturday was Team Spartan, made up of 31st Engr. Bn. commander Lt. Col. Margaret McGunegle and Command Sgt. Maj. Timothy Larrington, which completed the out-and-back course in 2 minutes, 22 seconds to win the Torpedo Award in the Adult Division.
In the Family Division, Team Normandy, made up of Ken Crowe and his daughter, MacKenzie, 3, finished first. Team Normandy also won the High Seas Award in the division for showing the best team spirit.
The Adult Division Admiral Award for the “best dressed” crew and watercraft went to the 554th Engineer Battalion Team Dragons, made up of Capt. Eric Anderson and Sgt. Daniel Scheck.
The Family Division Admiral Award winners were Matthew Hendricks and his daughter, Mila, which made up Team Kraken. The team also won the Titanic Award in the Family Division for the most dramatic sinking.
The Adult Division High Seas Award went to Team Catalina Wine Mixer from the 35th Engineer Battalion, which included battalion commander Lt. Col. Calvin Kroeger and 1st Sgt. Eric Madsen.
The Adult Division Titanic Award went to the Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear School watercraft, Flotsam of Excellence, crewed by Lt. Col. Matthew Brohm and Capt. Michael Krant.
