The Company A, 554th Engineer Battalion, extended their one-stroke lead after the first round to a nine-stroke victory after the second, to take home the 2018 Commander’s Cup Golf Tournament Trophy.
Team members Benjamin Barclay, Victor Rivera, Tony Helmers and Cory Springer were presented with the trophy at the conclusion of the second round Aug. 16 at Piney Valley Golf Course.
Eight teams took part in the tournament, with teams playing the front nine Aug. 9 and completing the course by finishing the back nine Aug. 16.
It was the perfect end to a perfect season for the Co. A, 554th Engr. Bn. team, which entered the two-week tournament as the top seed after finishing the regular intramural season with a record of 7-0. It was also a return trip to the trophy presentation for Rivera, Helmers and Springer, who were on the post-championship 554th Engr. Bn. team in 2017.
The 554th Engr. Bn. team finished two under par after the first round, shooting a 68, just ahead of the Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 3rd Chemical Brigade, which shot a 69, and still within striking distance was the Air Force Detachment 1, 364th Training Squadron, which finished the first round with a 72.
But the second round belonged to the Co. A, 554th Engr. Bn., which took four strokes off its first-round performance to finish with a 64 Aug. 16, while HHC, 3rd Chem. Bde. went two over par that same night to finish with a 72, and the Air Force Det. finished with a 75.
In the final tally, Co. A, 554th Engr. Bn. took first place with a combined tournament score of 132, while the HHC, 3rd Chem. Bde. was second with a 141. The Air Force Det. (147) took third place, followed by the 14th Military Police Brigade (153) in fourth place and the 31st Engineer Battalion (159) rounding out the top five tournament teams.
