There’s more than one way to celebrate independence, and Fort Leonard Wood has two events that will simultaneously let participants show their patriotic colors and improve their fitness.
The annual “These Colors Don’t Run” 5k will be held at 8 a.m. Wednesday at Davidson Fitness Center, while the annual Red, White and Blue Golf Tournament gets underway at 8 a.m. July 7 at Piney Valley Golf Course.
Fort Leonard Wood has held color runs in conjunction with its Independence Day celebration since 2013. For a $15 advance sign-up fee, participants get a white, short-sleeved T-shirt, which will be covered in red- and blue-colored powder along the 5k route.
“The primary objective is to have colored pigments thrown at yourself,” explained Kirstan Carpenter, fitness coordinator with Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation. “(The color) usually sticks to shoes, and you may find the color in your ears or in other body parts for about a week. The rest of it washes off fairly easily.”
The 5k is a fun run and is not timed.
“The primary goal is for everyone to have a good time and end up being covered (in color),” Carpenter said.
The route starts and finishes at DFC and will follow the same path as last year.
Carpenter advises participants to bring extra clothes or towels to put in their car. Runners with strollers are also advised to at least partially cover them.
“It is open to runners with strollers, but if you have an infant, I highly suggest covering the stroller in plastic so that it doesn’t get on them. They make a rain tarp to put over strollers now.”
Carpenter also has advice for runners who want to keep the color on their shirts as a souvenir: “Don’t wash them,” she said. “If you do wash them, it looks like it got washed with a red sock.”
