Commander’s Cup tourney, future Rec League games postponed
The 2020 intramural basketball season is now over, with teams completing the final week of Conference B games March 10 and 11 at Davidson Fitness Center.
Teams in both Conference B and Conference A, which finished its season Feb. 19, will now shift their focus to the 2020 Commander’s Cup tournament, and they’ll have plenty of time to prepare.
The tournament, which was originally scheduled to begin Tuesday, along with all Recreation League games originally scheduled this week and next week, has been postponed until further notice as part of ongoing precautions taken to prevent exposure to COVID-19, also known as the novel coronavirus.
In an email to players and coaches Friday, Billy Ray, representing the Sports Department, made the announcement and advised teams to check back regularly with the FMWR website, https://leonardwood.armymwr.com, and the FMWR Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/mwr.ftwood for updates.
When it is played, the top three teams in Conference B will face the top three in Conference A — the 14th Military Police Brigade, the Medical Department Activity and the Sappers — in a double-elimination format.
In the final Conference B standings, the combined Maneuver Support Center of Excellence/ Combat Training Company team took first place with a season record of 8-2, followed by the 1st Engineer Brigade in second place with a record of 7-3 and the 3rd Chemical Brigade in third place with a record of 5-5.
“This year’s basketball season has been a lot more competitive than it’s been in the past,” Ray said March 10. “Conference A has had some pretty good teams, but I believe Conference B has had the heavier load as far as teams and tough competition. It’s going to be interesting to see who comes out on top.”
Rounding out Conference B standings were the 5th Engineer Battalion in fourth place at 5-5, the Office of the Staff Judge Advocate, also at 5-5, in fifth place, and the 31st Engineer Battalion in sixth place at 0-10.
March 10 was a good night for the 5th Engr. Bn., which defeated OSJA 56-35. The 5th Engineers were led by Jamal Kirklen, who scored 18 points, and Brandon Wade, who added 11 points.
“I just took advantage where I could,” Kirklen said.
In the late game March 10, the 1st Engr. Bde. defeated the 31st Engr. Bn. 118-27.
In games played March 11, the 1st Engr. Bde. defeated the 5th Engr. Bn. 62-39, and the MSCoE/CTC team beat OSJA 57-40.
The current Recreation League standings, as of Friday, were as follows:
In Conference A, the Hot Boyz are in first place with a season record of 6-0, followed by the U.S. Marine Corps Detachment (4-2) in second place, the 58th Transportation Battalion (3-4) in third place, Ozark Ques (2-3) in fourth place and the MSCoE/CTC Rec League team (0-6) in sixth place.
