The Sapper Training Company, known on the Davidson Fitness Center courts as simply “the Sappers,” built an early lead on their way to a 51-46 victory over the 31st Engineer Battalion as teams completed the seventh week of Fort Leonard Wood’s 2019 intramural basketball season.
In a game that pitted two strong defenses against each other, the 31st Engineers scored first on a layup by R.J. Davis. The Sappers took the lead on layups by Louie Smith and John Adkerson and shots from inside and long range by Timothy Smith, while the 31st Engineers attempted to close the gap on goals by Davis and Tim Larrington.
In the end, the Sappers outlasted the Engineers to hold onto a 5-point lead as time ran out.
In other games played Feb. 27:
— The U.S. Marine Det. and the Maneuver Support Center of Excellence picked up forfeit wins.
— The 14th Military Police Brigade defeated Combat Training Company 68-40;
— The 1st Engineer Brigade beat the 2nd Battalion, 10th Infantry Regiment, 59-30;
In intramural games played Feb. 26:
— The 554th Engineer Battalion defeated the 5th Engineer Battalion 66-55;
— The 43rd Adjutant General Battalion beat the 3rd Battalion, 10th Infantry Regiment, 54-28;
— The 14th MP Bde. beat the 2-10th Inf. Bn., 56-35;
— CTC picked up a forfeit win;
— The 1st Engineer Brigade defeated the 2nd Battalion, 48th Infantry Regiment, 59-37;
— MSCoE beat the Marine Det. 59-57.
In the standings, the 1st. Engr. Bde. is currently in first place with a season record of 10-1. They are followed by the 43rd AG Bn. (9-1), the Medical Department Activity (6-2), MSCoE (6-4), the 554th Engr. Bn. (6-4), CTC (6-4), the 5th Engr. Bn. (4-6), the Sappers (4-6) the Marine Det. (4-7), the 58th Transportation Battalion (3-5), the 3-10th Inf. Bn. (3-6), the 31st Engr. Bn. (3-6), the 2-10th Inf. Bn. (3-7), the 2nd Battalion, 48th Infantry Regiment, (2-8); and the 1st Battalion, 58th Infantry Regiment (1-8).
Three weeks remain in the season.
In Rec League games played Feb. 25 at DFC:
— MSCoE defeated the Engineer Basic Officer Leader Course 61-39;
— The 2-10th Inf. Bn. and 14th MP Bde. picked up forfeit wins;
— Ozark Ques beat the U.S. Air Force 68-20.
Four teams have only one loss so far this season, led by MSCoE and Ozark Ques, both at 4-1, the 2-10th Inf. Bn., at 3-1, and the UnderDawgs, also at 3-1. They are followed by the 14th MP Bn. (2-0), E-BOLC (1-2), the USAF (1-2) and the 2-48th Inf. Bn. (1-3).
