By Chaplain (Capt.) Vance Awa
Do you ever daydream? It is actually an important practice. Go ahead, take a moment.
This thought comes from a break in the day where I took a moment, sat back in my office chair and listened to the yelling of cadences, the booms and pops going on outside. I listened to the hustle and bustle of the staff shops as we all made preparations and put plans into action. There is a beauty to it all that just struck me – the beauty of the moment is always there, waiting to be realized.
To me, this is a spiritual practice. The Bible says a lot about the wonder and glory of God, but that can be pushed aside by the business of life. As much as my head is in the clouds, I see God here among us.
God is in our relationships. Appreciate that relationship that’s been enriching your life. God is in our professions; take a moment, think about it. God is in our circumstances – the good times and the difficult times.
Maybe it just takes a moment of reflection to see God’s presence, but I guarantee God is there. Jesus was amidst of criminals on the cross. God was present with the Israelites as they wandered in the desert. The spirit of God was present at the creation of the heavens and the Earth – God is present in our life, whatever your circumstances.
One of my favorite phrases associated with the military is the call to “embrace the suck.” It is one of my favorites because no matter what the circumstances are, even the “suck,” I believe that God is right there, embracing it with me. My mental image is of running the Night Infiltration Course and feeling God crawling next to me.
We do not need to be in a situation like that to recognize God’s presence because it is all around us. As the calendar fills with summertime activities, don’t forget to pause, take a breath and let your mind wander. I bet that you’ll feel the presence of God.
