The FLW United soccer club represented Fort Leonard Wood over the weekend at the annual St. Louis Cup of Nations Soccer Tournament, where they placed second overall in the Adult Recreation Division.
Division games were held Saturday and Sunday at Worldwide Technology Soccer Park in Fenton, Missouri.
FLW United opened the tournament in round-robin play with three consecutive wins Saturday over St. Louis-area teams, beating the Vatican Sunrisers, 9-1 and Sublette Strikers, 7-1 after opening the tournament with a 5-4 victory over United FC.
Seeded third overall heading into the playoffs, FLW United beat Umoja in the quarterfinals, 6-1, then beat Athletico FC, 5-2, to advance to the championship match, where they fell to Team Romania, 10-7.
Forward Kevin Beerman led FLW United in scoring with a total of 10 goals over the six games played in the tournament. He was followed closely by forward Stanley Ballantyne, who finished with eight.
FLW United, which is made up of Fort Leonard Wood military and civilian personnel, will return to World Wide Technology Soccer Park on Saturday, where they will play the opening game of “Unsung Heroes Night” against the St. Louis Enforcers at 5 p.m. prior to the match between the St. Louis Football Club and the Seattle Sounders at 7:30 p.m. Tickets range from $18 to $31 per person and are available at saintlouisfc.com. The FLW United soccer club will also represent the post at the annual Defender’s Cup all-military tournament, scheduled Aug. 31 through Sept. 3 in San Antonio.
