Fort Leonard Wood plans to celebrate the U.S. Army’s 243rd birthday with several events on post June 14, which is the official Army birth date.
The events, which are all open to the public, include a division-style Army birthday run kicking off at 5:30 a.m. from Gammon Field, followed by the annual birthday cake-cutting ceremony and ice cream social at 10 a.m. at the Maneuver Support Center of Excellence Plaza.
The final tribute for the day will be the Streamer and Retreat Ceremony at 4:30 p.m. at the MSCoE Plaza for Fort Leonard Wood and members of the surrounding communities.
“There is plenty of parking available in the MSCoE overflow parking and around the building for anyone that wants to attend,” said Sgt. 1st Carl Pope, MSCoE Operations noncommissioned officer in charge. “(This) is a great family event that will showcase the placing of the Army’s Campaign streamers on the Army Flag, followed by Retreat. “
Pope said if family members are planning on taking part in the morning run, they should plan on arriving early and take the opportunity to stretch.
“There will be no parking allowed on Iowa and Constitution to allow the units to maximize the roadways for the larger formations,” Pope said. “The run will be at a steady pace to ensure spouses and families are able to complete the run and enjoy the morning with their spouse. I recommend wearing comfortable, tasteful workout attire and good, broken-in running shoes and be well hydrated.”
Pope said he encourages community members to take part in the day’s events.
“It is important because it reminds us of where we came from, where we have been and how we are forging the Army forward. These events let us celebrate our heritage with our current force and the force of the past; both retirees and those that have gone before us. It is also a great learning opportunity for our young Soldiers and officers on the installation, to see the pride and espirit de corps as the traditions are continued, and that they will continue as they begin their careers.
