Fort Leonard Wood’s Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation offers three swimming pools, two outdoor and one indoor, to all families, military and non-military.
— Davidson Fitness Center houses the 25-meter indoor pool, a slide and two diving boards. Recreational swimming is available Monday through Friday from 4:30 to 8 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Lap swimming is available Monday through Friday from 6:30 to 7:30 a.m., as well as from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. For military families, the cost is $3 per person, and for non-military, it is $5 per person.
Davidson Fitness Center also hosts Red Cross Lifeguard Certifications classes. The classes are typically offered two or three times a year between February and April. Once certified, lifeguarding provides an ideal job opportunity for both high schoolers and college students.
“Being a lifeguard can be stressful at times, but is a very rewarding and exciting job,” said Floyd Moore, lead lifeguard at Lieber Heights pool.
Julian Burnham, a lead lifeguard at Wallace Pool, adds “Every summer the MWR pools are looking for more and more lifeguards. It is a wonderful job.”
— Wallace Outdoor Pool and Splash Park is located at the FMWR Rec Plex, located at 5561 Constitution Ave. The Rec Plex includes an Olympic-sized pool, a pair of two-story slides, two diving boards and a zero-entry Splash Park. Recreational swimming is available seven days a week from noon to 7 p.m., while lap swimming is open weekdays from 11 a.m. to noon. For military Families, the cost is $4 per person, and for non-military it is $6 per person. Annual and seasonal passes can be purchased at the Rec Plex and are valid at all FMWR aquatics facilities.
“Wallace is a wonderful place for the Family,” Burnham said. “It offers fun for all ages.”
While at the Rec Plex, patrons can enjoy the 23,000 square-foot beautifully landscaped mini-golf course featuring 18 holes of challenging and exciting obstacles.
Also located at the Rec Plex is the FMWR Go Kart Track, which offers a 1,000-linear-foot track with many challenging twists, turns and high-bank curves.
FMWR also offers pool parties at both Davidson Fitness Center, Fridays from 8 to 10 p.m. and Saturdays and Sundays from 4 to 6 p.m and at the Rec Plex during operational hours. The cost varies based on attendance. Pool party requests must be submitted two weeks in advance.
— Lieber Heights Pool is located at 8220 Turner Street on Fort Leonard Wood. Lieber Heights includes a swimming pool, slide and two diving boards. It is open five days a week, excluding Tuesdays and Wednesdays, from noon to 7 p.m. For military families, the cost is $4 per person, and for non-military it is $6 a person.
Swim lessons are solely held at this pool on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays for Parent/Child Level 1 Learn to Swim and Level 2 Learn to Swim.
“Anyone interested should contact Child and Youth Services Parent Central Service,” said Nikki Stone, lead lifeguard at Wallace Outdoor Pool and swimming instructor. Stone said slots are currently full, but interested parents and swimmers can be put on a waiting list.
“I recommend getting on the list just in case we are able to fill more slots or offer more lessons at a later time,” Stone said.
