FMWR urging certified individuals to apply now at usajobs.gov

Attention certified lifeguards: Summer is coming, and Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation is looking for you.
With Fort Leonard Wood’s outdoor swimming pools set to open in late May, the installation needs at least 20 lifeguards, according to Shawn Koehler, FMWR Aquatics manager. New lifeguards will start May 23.
“The summer season is our busiest season for Family and MWR,” Koehler said. “In order to provide fun and safe recreation programs for our service members and families, FMWR has a requirement for 20 lifeguards.”
Lifeguards should have certifications in lifeguarding, first aid, CPR and AED (also known as Automated External Defibrillator training).
Applicants with the required certifications completed and in hand can apply through USAJobs.gov. Once on the site, search for “Fort Leonard Wood Lifeguards.”
Koehler said lifeguarding is one of the most rewarding jobs in FMWR.
“I have been a lifeguard for a little over 10 years here for Fort Leonard Wood, and I have been afforded many opportunities through DFMWR and get the privilege of working with Soldiers and their families every day,” Koehler said.
“We are in the business of keeping all our patrons safe while they enjoy all the facilities we have to offer. We are also the first line of defense in the aquatic facilities and are held to a high standard. If you are a leader and enjoy helping others, becoming a lifeguard here at Fort Leonard Wood would be a great fit and a very rewarding experience,” he said.
Apply online, in person
When applying online at usajobs.com, lifeguard applicants must ensure they properly complete the application form, to include work history, and attach their resume and additional qualifying documents, such as lifeguard, first aid, CPR and AED certifications.
To apply in person, applicants can stop by the Fort Leonard Wood NAF CPO Office Civilian Personnel Advisory Center, located at 13486 Replacement Ave. in Bldg. 470, Room 2223. There, personnel can assist applicants through the hiring process.
Koehler said anyone with questions about becoming a lifeguard can contact him at the Fort Leonard Wood Rec Plex at 573.596.0843 or Nicole Stone, FMWR lead lifeguard and Red Cross lifeguard instructor, at 573.596.2810.
