The U.S. Marine Corps Detachment won the final Commander’s Cup event of 2018, taking home the Commander’s Cup 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament trophy Saturday at the conclusion of the one-day tournament held at Davidson Fitness Center.
Marine Det. team members Greg Ashby, Jarod Shrock, Dakota Herpich and Jonathan Kalisik were presented with the tournament trophy.
Six teams took part in the single-elimination tournament, which featured short, single-period games.
In the first round, the 31st Engineer Battalion defeated the 1st Battalion, 58th Infantry Regiment, Headquarters and Headquarters Detachment,16-13, while the 554th Engineer Battalion beat the 14th Military Police Brigade, 18-13, to become the first teams to advance.
In the second round, the 5th Engineer Battalion defeated the 31st Engr. Bn., 22-10, and the Marine Det. beat the 554th Engr. Bn., 21-7 to advance to the championship round.
In the championship, the Marine Det. defeated the 5th Engr. Bn., 11-8, while the 31st Engr. Bn. beat the 554th Engr. Bn., 19-17, to win the third-place game.
The tournament was the final event of the 2018 Commander’s Cup series, which began in fall, 2017, with the start of the fiscal year.
