By Maj. Gen. Donna Martin and Command Sgt. Maj. James Breckinridge
Special to GUIDON
On Monday, we take the time to honor the heroes whose lives were lost in service to our great Nation. It is also a time to reflect on the blessings we have and the lifestyle we are afforded because of their bravery. Let us not forget the service or the sacrifices that preserve our freedoms.
President Harry Truman held, “Our debt to the heroic men and valiant women in the service of our country can never be repaid. They have earned our undying gratitude. America will never forget their sacrifices.”
On this day, take a moment to pause and reflect on those service members who gave their all. Showing gratitude could even mean stopping by a cemetery to lay a flower or an American flag on the grave of someone who served to protect our Nation. We will never forget their bravery, and we honor their memories.
During Memorial Day weekend and as the summer season approaches, we encourage you to enjoy the many outdoor activities available at Fort Leonard Wood and in the surrounding area. However, we ask that you maintain situational awareness and be safe.
Through simple risk identification and mitigation steps, such as responsible use of alcohol, proper sleep, driving without distraction and having a plan in place for emergencies, incidents can be avoided; thus, saving lives and reducing injuries. We count on each member of our team to exercise sound judgement to ensure you and your loved ones, colleagues, and friends remain safe. Safety must be a priority and an ever-present standard, both on and off duty.
Whether you are in the military, a Department of Defense civilian, a retired service member, a contractor or a Family member, you are a part of our Fort Leonard Wood team of teams.
Look after one another, talk to those within your care, hold one another accountable and please be safe every day. Each of you plays a vital role in the success of our mission, and we want every member of our team to return to duty safely. We are proud to serve with you.
(Editor’s note: Martin is the Maneuver Support Center of Excellence and Fort Leonard Wood commanding general. Breckinridge is the MSCoE and Fort Leonard Wood command sergeant major.)
