Waynesville High School junior Bryan O’Barr will advance to the Missouri State Cross-Country Meet after qualifying Saturday at the Class 4, Sectional 2 meet held at Parkway Central High School in Eureka, Missouri.
O’Barr finished the course in seventh place overall, with the top 30 advancing to the state meet.
“If anyone deserves to be at the state meet, it is Bryan O’Barr,” WHS cross-country coach Nicole Jarman said. “His work ethic and determination are on another level.”
Jarman said that during Saturday’s race, O’Barr, “got out in the middle of the pack and then worked his way up” to finish in the top 10.
“His hard work this season and tenacity in this race earned him a spot at the state cross-country meet,” she added.
Also competing for Waynesville was senior Madelyn Newsom, who ran her last cross-country race as a WHS Tiger, placing 53rd overall. Newsome has signed with Hannibal-LaGrange University to compete at the college level next year.
The state meet will be held Saturday at the Gans Creek Recreation Area in Columbia, Missouri. O’Barr’s race is scheduled for 12:05 p.m.
