Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation is holding three “pink” events this month, giving participants a chance to get fit while raising awareness about the fight against breast cancer. Events include this Saturday’s MWR Pink Fitness Event, a Pink 5K and Kid’s Half-Miler scheduled for Oct. 12 and the annual Pink Zumba Party, also happening Oct. 12.
All three events will take place at Davidson Fitness Center.
“All programs (are being) presented by the best fitness instructors you can find in mid-Missouri,” said Kirstan Carpenter, FMWR Fitness coordinator.
The Pink Fitness Event begins at 9 a.m. Saturday in the DFC gym. Participants will get a chance to take part in the installation’s fitness programs.
“(It’s) two hours of calorie-burning group fitness,” Carpenter explained. “It includes Body Pump 111 release, which is a high-reps, low-weight endurance training. Pound gets you fit to rhythmic drumming. Ripped includes resistance, intervals, power, plyo and endurance training. Cycling provides non-impact indoor cycling; Core de Force is three-minute rounds of boxing training, and yoga focuses balance, breathing and relaxation to restore our body.”
Admission is $20 per person, which includes a Breast Cancer Awareness T-shirt. Participants can also choose to do the Pink Fitness Event and the Pink Zumba Party, with the T-shirt, for $30. T-shirts are also available for purchase individually for $15.
The Pink 5K will begin at 8 a.m. Oct. 12 outside DFC. The run, which is free and open to the public, welcomes runners pushing strollers and dogs on leashes. Children are also invited to bike the course, but must wear helmets. The Kid’s Half-Miler will follow at 9 a.m.
The Pink Zumba Party is scheduled from 9 to 11 a.m. Oct. 12 in the DFC gym, with several types of Zumba workouts set to music.
“The Pink Zumba Party is not just for dancers,” Carpenter said. “Strong by Zumba will be featured to showcase its high-intensity intervals, kick-boxing and body-weight choreographed movements. Zumba Step is a cardio-based program that includes a step added for intensity. The last hour will be all Zumba: fun, sweaty, moving, shaking, dancing and a real celebration to honor, memorialize and support all breast-cancer family members.”
Like the fitness event, entry to the Pink Zumba Party is $20 per person, with the $30 option for both events also available.
