The Fine Linen Theatre company of Rolla will present the musical “Newsies” March 28 through April 6 in Leach Theatre, located inside Castleman Hall on the Missouri University of Science and Technology campus.
This Tony-award-winning stage version of the 1992 Disney movie of the same name tells the true story of the 1899 Newsboy’s Strike and revolves around a youth-led campaign to force changes to the way the major news chains of the day compensated their child labor force of newspaper hawkers. The strike involved thousands of “newsies” and was successful in forcing the newspaper companies to offer full buy-backs to their sellers, thus increasing the amount of money that newsies received for their work.
The Fine Linen Theatre production includes 52 cast members on stage, 13 musicians in the pit orchestra and a talented group of technicians and crew members. The production includes several members with links to local current and retired military families, including Steve Lah, Jamie Pelligrini, Mike Knueper, Ilene Morgan, Isabella Grosso, Stevie Tupper, Nikita Gahr and Belen, Andrew and James Hamacher.
Tickets to “Newsies” start at $8 for adults and $4 for students and children, with staggered pricing depending on seating.
