Attendees can select ‘People’s Choice’ chili award during event
Whether you prefer your chili mild, spicy or four-alarm hot, the upcoming Polar Meltdown Chili Cook-Off likely has something for you.
Held annually by the Waynesville-St. Robert Chamber of Commerce, the event challenges teams of cooks to make the tastiest pot of chili con carne. This year’s event is scheduled from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Jan. 25 at the Ark Community and Sports Center in Waynesville.
Admission is $5 per person and free for children ages 4 and younger.
Teams of up to six participants and individual entries, which consist of a cook and up to two assistants, will compete for a number of awards and prizes as they prepare their recipes on site.
All teams have to abide by rules set down by the chamber and the Pulaski County Health Department, which inspects each booth during the competition.
In addition to their chili, teams are also judged on their presentation and their booth, which typically follows a theme. Many teams opt to dress in costumes, and some even perform short skits for the judges and the audience.
Awards will be presented to the top three teams in two categories: People’s Choice and Showmanship. Audience members determine the People’s Choice winner by placing money in jars in their favorite booth or booths.
The Showmanship Award will be chosen by a panel of judges, who will consider each entry’s overall presentation of theme, demonstrations and performances.
The Judges’ Choice Grand Champion Chili Award will be presented to the entry with the best chili, while the Best of Show winner will be determined by a combination of the judges’ scores for chili and showmanship.
During the event, live music will be performed by Tony Ray, who has played at several previous events.
Tickets for the Polar Meltdown Chili Cook-Off are on sale at the chamber office, located on the lower level of the St. Robert Visitor Center at 137 St. Robert Blvd.
