The Waynesville High School Tigers varsity boys’ swim team had a strong showing in a multi-school meet Oct. 13 in Springfield, Missouri, where Gavin Miller earned state consideration with his performance in the 50-meter freestyle.
Miller took second place overall in the event, finishing with a time of 23.99 seconds at the Foster Natatorium, where Waynesville competed against Springfield schools Central and Kickapoo, as well as teams from Ozark, Rogersville and West Plains, Missouri.
Earning state consideration means that if 32 swimmers do not qualify by meeting the automatic state standard time in that event, Miller will be an automatic qualifier to compete at the state level.
Other top finishers for Waynesville included:
— Bailey Raines took first in the 200-meter individual medley with a time of 2:21.83.
— The 200-meter free relay team of Grant Kindred, Tyler Newsom, Miller and Raines took third place with a time of 1:47.83.
— The 400-meter free relay team of Jacob Dye, Newsom, Miller and Raines took second place, finishing in 4:08.02.
The Tigers also had a strong showing at a meet held Oct. 9 at Foster Natatorium. Competing against Central, Hillcrest, Lebanon, Marshfield and Rogersville teams, Raines led Waynesville with first-place finishes in the 200-meter individual medley and 500-meter freestyle. Miller finished fourth in the 50-meter freestyle; Dye took first in both the 200-meter freestyle and 100-meter breaststroke, and the 200-meter relay team of Kindred, Newsom, Miller and Raines placed third.
