The Waynesville High School Tigers varsity football team scored a crucial fourth-quarter touchdown to secure its first victory of the season 31-27 against the visiting Hillcrest Hornets Friday night at Tiger Stadium.
The Tigers took an early 10-0 lead in the first quarter, then added seven points while giving up a touchdown to Hillcrest in the second quarter to enjoy a 17-7 lead at halftime. But Hillcrest rebounded, scoring 20 unanswered points in the third quarter to claim the lead. WHS quarterback Mike Lewis rushed for the final touchdown of the game to take the lead with nearly a minute left on the clock. The Tiger defense then held on, preventing the Hornets from scoring as time ran out to secure the win.
