The Waynesville High School varsity Tigers football team overcame a 16-0 deficit to defeat the Glendale Falcons 28-24 Friday at Glendale High School in Springfield, Missouri.
The Tigers were held scoreless until early in the second quarter, when WHS punt returner Danyl McCullough rushed 35 yards for a touchdown. A short time later, WHS quarterback Michael Lewis scored on a 54-yard run to narrow the Falcons’ lead to 16-14 at halftime.
Lewis scored again late in the third quarter following a key interception by Deron Anderson. Tiger running back Eric Richardson scored the final TD for Waynesville on a 44-yard run on a 4th-down-and-6 play.
Senior defensive back Kevin Poinsette led WHS defensively with 12 tackles. Defensive linemen Jamarion Fane and LaShawn Mabry had nine tackles each; of those, Fane had three sacks and Mabry recorded two.
Up next: The Tigers (5-3) will play host to the Parkview Vikings (1-7) from Springfield, Missouri, at 7 p.m. Friday at Tiger Stadium.
The Waynesville cross-country teams held their home meet Oct. 17 at Piney Valley Golf Course, competing against Rolla, Parkview and Glendale high schools.
Waynesville’s Bryan O’Barr was the champion of the varsity boys’ race, finishing the 2-mile course in 9 minutes, 51 seconds.
For the Lady Tigers, Madelyn Newsom finished second overall in 12:21.
The Tigers won the first-place plaques in the varsity boys’, varsity girls’ and junior-varsity girls’ divisions.
