Command Sgt. Maj. James Breckinridge, Maneuver Support Center of Excellence and Fort Leonard Wood command sergeant major, and Marines with the post’s U.S. Marine Corps Detachment kick off the celebration of the Corps’ 244 years of service to the nation Tuesday by running the first of 241 consecutive miles to be run before the detachment completes the final three together early this morning. This has become an annual event here, as Marine students are paired with detachment personnel to run each mile carrying the Marine flag in order to enhance esprit de corps and celebrate the Corps’ heritage. In addition to the birthday run, the detachment will host a ball for permanent-party personnel at 6 p.m. Saturday at the Tan-Tar-A Resort at the Lake of the Ozarks. Fort Leonard Wood is home to the largest USMC detachment not located on a Marine installation.
