The 31st Engineer Battalion Spartans won its first match of the intramural volleyball season for the 2019 fiscal year.
Teams gathered Oct. 30 at Davidson Fitness Center to begin the season. The 31st Engr. Bn. beat the 14th Military Police Brigade, 25-15, 25-21, for a total score of 50-36.
Jeff O’Loughlin, 31st Engr. Bn. Spartans’ team captain and coach, said his players, “went out there and performed great, with great communication and cohesion.”
“It was great to out there and get a win, especially with the limited amount of practice time we had,” O’Loughlin added.
Like many military-unit teams, scheduling practice times around duty schedules proved difficult for the Spartans, who played together for the first time during their season debut. Luckily, a few of the players had played together in previous years, O’Loughlin said.
“We were able to bring some of those old (plays) back. We didn’t miss a beat,” he said. “We worked well as a team together.”
The victory was the first of three matches the 31st Engr. Bn. would play that evening, all of which resulted in victories. The Spartans defeated the 3rd Battalion, 10th Infantry Regiment, 50-43, in their 7 p.m. game, then went on to beat the 2nd Battalion, 48th Infantry Regiment, 50-32 in the 8 p.m. game.
O’Loughlin said his team knew they had a challenge playing three matches in one night when the arrived at DFC.
“It’s the only time, at any point in the season, we have three games back-to-back-to-back,” he said.
